Ana comes back from behind

The lead passed from hand to hand, 7 times over — it was anyone's guess.

Ana took the game with 95 points and a 26-point cushion — never really in doubt. In the second of the middle eights: Ana called 1, took 4, and Luis and Mihai were left out in the cold.

Vyce took second with 69 points — a fine evening, but the gods of whist were busy elsewhere. In the third of the opening eights: Vyce said 3, made 6, and the evening was ruined for Mihai. Vyce was even in front after the four-card hand on the way up.

Third, on the podium: Luis, up there with eyes on the top step. Luis got past Mihai at the very last hand. Luis was even in front after the six-card hand on the way down.

Mihai closes out the table, with 63 points. "Last one buys the coffee" — as they say at the table. From leader to red lantern. The little wedge tipped the big cart — and the cart was Mihai. Mihai was ahead of Luis right up to the last hand.
