Play Romanian Whist online, free

Romanian Whist (Whist Românesc) is a bidding card game for 4 to 6 players, every player for themselves. Before each round you say exactly how many tricks you will take, and only an exact bid scores. Play it with friends at a table of your own, against bots, or with other players at once — on a phone or a computer, with nothing to download.

A friendly table's lobby: four chairs, two of them bots, the choice of 8-1-8 or 8-8-8, the bid clock and the table chat.

Play with friends

Open a friendly table and your friends join it from the list of tables. Chat in the lobby, choose 8-1-8 or 8-8-8 and how long each bid takes, and add bots to any empty chair, so three friends can still play six-handed.

A solo game on a phone: six players around the table, a trick being played and your cards at the bottom, the ones you may play lit.

Play against the AI

Play offline against bots that weigh every bid and every card, with no account and nothing to install. Or press Play Online to pick a room and play other people within seconds.

The analysis after a game: an overall score, bidding, discarding and trick handling, and the moves worth another look.

Get better as you play

Switch on the coach for a short word on a move that could have been better, and read a report after a friendly or solo game on your best finds and your costliest mistakes. Signed-in players also climb the weekly leaderboard.

One of the twelve rooms: a café with a round table, a chequered floor and a window on the street.

Play online in the rooms

Press Play Online and pick one of twelve rooms, from a village cottage to a palace, then a quick game of six rounds or the classic 8-1-8. The podium wins the room's prize in coins, levels open new rooms, a weekly league moves you up the ranks, and a coffee multiplies your prize. A classic game also pays coffees and gold bars for playing well: the coach's score, and seven good hands in a row.

Questions

Is it free, and do I need an account?

It is free, with no ads. Guests can play under any name. A free account — a code sent to your email, no password — reserves your name, shows your picture and counts your wins on the leaderboard.

How many people can play?

Four to six. The host of a friendly table can fill empty chairs with bots, and a chair whose player has left is played by a bot, so a game never gets stuck.

What does 8-1-8 mean?

The number of cards dealt in each round: the game opens with 8-card rounds, counts down to a single card, climbs back up and ends with 8-card rounds again. In the 8-8-8 variant the single-card rounds are 8-card rounds too.

What are coins, coffees and gold bars?

Coins pay a room's entry and are what its podium wins; a new account starts with 1,000. A coffee multiplies the prize you win in one game, from ×1.5 to ×5. Gold bars buy coffees and open the last two rooms; you earn them for your first game each day, on your class's weekly podium, and for playing a classic game well.

What is VIP, and how do I get it?

VIP is free: every signed-in player with a name is VIP on two days a week, picked at random and different for everyone, with nothing to buy. A VIP day runs from midnight to midnight, Romanian time, and the home screen greets you when one comes. That day the VIP rooms open — the sixth, and the palace, which still takes its gold bars — and quick and classic games alike give you what a friendly table does: the coach's tips, and after the game the full analysis and the game's story.

What does a classic game pay for playing well?

A classic game in the rooms pays coffees and gold bars on top of the prize, whatever your place, when you are signed in and play your own cards to the end. The coach judges your moves in silence: 90 % earns a coffee, 95 % two coffees and 5 gold bars, and more gold bars come for each green category, for a game without a single mistake and for clever finds. Seven good hands in a row (one-card rounds aside) earn an Espresso, 14 an Espresso, 21 an Espresso and 20 gold bars. The first room pays them for three classic games a day.

What is the daily Challenge?

Once a day, signed-in players can enter the Challenge for 20 gold bars: three classic games in the Palace, played against everyone in the classic rooms. Finish in the top three in all three and you take the day's draw, announced at midnight: coins that count for your weekly league, gold bars, strong coffees or three VIP days. Win or not, the coffees and gold bars your play earns in the three games are yours.
