Luis takes it in the closing rounds

After the opening eights, 3 players were level on 18 points — it was going to be a long one.

First place: Luis, with 90 points. In the first of the closing eights: Luis said 1, made 4, and the evening was ruined for Mihai. And that despite a slip in the very last hand.

Ana finishes second, 11 points short of gold. Silver shines, but not quite the same. The last hand decided it: Ana went past Mihai right on the line.

Mihai rounds out the podium with 76 points. Bronze still counts as a medal. Mihai was ahead of Ana right up to the last hand.

Ionela took last place without any nerves at all, on 59 points. Ionela had the table at their feet after the last of the opening eights. Whist was there to remind them nothing lasts forever. In the second of the middle eights, Ionela bid 1 and took 4 — and Ana and Mihai went down with them.
